WHY CHOOSE US . . .
ESE Lightning Arrester – Early Streamer Emission Lightning Protection System
An ESE Lightning Arrester (Early Streamer Emission Air Terminal) is an advanced lightning protection air-terminal designed to initiate an upward connecting streamer earlier than a conventional Franklin-type air terminal, according to the ESE operating principle. The device is installed at an elevated position, normally on a dedicated lightning protection mast, and connected through down conductors Through DIgital lightning strike counter to a suitable Earthing system.
ESE lightning protection systems are designed and evaluated using the NF C 17-102 methodology. The protection radius is not a fixed value for every installation. It depends on three principal parameters: the height of the ESE air terminal above the surface being protected, the required Lightning Protection Level (LPL), and the certified advance time (ΔT) of the ESE terminal.
An important distinction is that an ESE air terminal is a lightning air-termination device, not a surge protective device (SPD). Its function is to intercept a lightning discharge and provide a controlled path for the lightning current through the down-conductor network and into the earthing system.
How Does an ESE Lightning Arrester Work?
During the development of a lightning discharge, an upward connecting leader can develop from elevated objects when the electric field becomes sufficiently strong. ESE technology is designed around the concept of producing an upward streamer with a measured time advance compared with a conventional air terminal.
The ΔT (Delta-T) value is therefore a critical technical characteristic of an ESE air terminal. Under the 2011 NF C 17-102 methodology, the recognized ΔT range is 10 μs to 60 μs. If testing produces a value above 60 μs, calculations under the standard are made using 60 μs.
The actual protection system must also include appropriately sized down conductors, equipotential bonding and an effective earthing arrangement. An ESE terminal alone does not constitute a complete lightning protection system.
We engineer for the direct strike, calculating thermal capacity down to the microsecond to ensure zero-failure system with our Digital lightning strike counter .
ESE Lightning Arrester vs Conventional Lightning Rod
A conventional Franklin air terminal relies on its physical geometry and the applicable conventional lightning-protection design method.
An ESE terminal is designed and tested around the Early Streamer Emission principle and uses a CPRI certified ΔT value in the NF C 17-102 protection-radius methodology.
The two systems should therefore not be compared simply by saying that an ESE terminal has a particular "coverage radius." The coverage must be calculated according to the applicable design methodology.
